Alan Titchmarsh is no longer with
Ground Force. But ... the series continues!

Alan Titchmarsh - Ground Force presenter

When a new series of Ground Force commenced on BBC 1 - 27th January 2003, it was minus Alan Titchmarsh. The new team was Charlie Dimmock, Tommy Walsh and Will Shanahan, plus newcomer Kirsty King. Not strictly speaking a newcomer though. Kirsty was already very familiar with Ground Force, as its associate producer.

Note:- Alan Titchmarsh also appeared in his last ever Gardeners' World programme, on Friday 1st November 2002. That's not to say that Alan has retired from television though! Alan's now presents a back-to-basics BBC2 series entitled "How To Be A Gardener". Alan is such a relaxed and informative presenter. How to be a Gardener is a series that's definitely worth watching!

---------------------------------

An earlier Daily Mail article about Alan's departure from Ground Force is reproduced below:-

When interviewed by the Daily Mail and asked if he thought his departure would be the end of Ground Force Alan said 'I have no idea. I shall smile sweetly and say ta-ra and that will be it.' When asked if he would consider changing his mind and staying on Alan replied ’No, I&'ve not had any thoughts like that. I’ll be happy to go.’

Reasons for leaving include the fact that it had become boring performing the same kind of two day garden makeover on the same kind of narrow, long suburban garden time and again. 'The repetition element is tough and you find yourself doing yet another garden with decking and a water feature and a bit of gravel. It has been getting much harder for us. The viewers like to have gardens which are like their own, which is long and thin. It has been a challenge, but I would rather stop doing it now before I run out of ideas. There’s a limit to what you can do over two days for £2,000. I sometimes think that I’d like to do brickwork in lovely intricate patterns, but there isn’t the time. I’d love to work in shiny stainless steel, but there isn’t the money.’

In the same interview Alan apologizes for the decking and blue paint! Last year sales of decking were up ten times on the year before and replaced thousands of traditional stone patios. ’I am partly to blame for the decking boom, and I am sorry, I know it’s everywhere these days. ’It’s a new surface that people haven’t used before. We had crazy paving. But after five years I do feel like I’ve been repeating myself with the decking, very much so. And the blue paint. I'm trying to stop using that. It’s very 1990s now you know. Things have gone too far. There’s a limit to what you can do.’

Tommy Walsh - Ground Force co-presenter Tommy Walsh gets down to a traditional decking, decked in a traditional kilt for a Ground Force programme filmed in Scotland.

There's now a page about Tommy for all Tommy's fans.

Charlie's fans will be delighted to see her back on UK television. She has already appeared in Charlie's Garden Army, Charlie's Wildlife Gardens and Cheer for Charlie in which Charlie trained and performed as a trapeze artist with Cottle and Austen's Circus.
